What FluMist Is and Which B.C. Children Can Get It

FluMist is a flu vaccine your child gets as a quick spray into each nostril, not as a needle. Many families choose it because some children are very anxious about needles. Others simply like that it is fast.

How the nasal spray works

FluMist is a live-attenuated influenza vaccine, often shortened to LAIV. “Live-attenuated” means it contains flu viruses that have been weakened. They are designed to trigger an immune response in the nose without causing the flu. For 2026–27, FluMist is trivalent. That means it targets three flu strains chosen for this season, as described in the NACI seasonal influenza vaccine statement for 2026–2027.

FluMist is an option for eligible children and teens aged 2–17; it is not authorized for children under 2.

Age rules in B.C.

Under 2: FluMist is not authorized. Babies 6 months and older can get an injected flu shot instead.

Ages 2 to 17: Eligible children may receive FluMist after screening.

At pharmacies: B.C. pharmacists can give the nasal spray to eligible children aged 2 and older. Injected flu shots at pharmacies generally start at age 4.

That pharmacy age difference matters. If your child is 2 or 3 and needs the injection, you may need a health unit or doctor’s office instead. Fraser Health’s flu shot page lists local options for younger children.

One dose or two?

Children aged 2 to 8 who have never had a flu vaccine need two doses. The doses are given at least 4 weeks apart. This helps a first-time immune system build stronger protection. Most other children need just one dose this season.

Example: A 5-year-old who has never had a flu vaccine gets a first dose in mid-October. The second dose is booked at least four weeks later. Their 10-year-old sibling, who had a shot last year, needs only one dose.

Not sure about your child’s history? Check their immunization record or ask your provider. For the bigger picture of this season, see our B.C. flu season 2026 guide.

FluMist vs. the Flu Shot: Which Fits Your Child?

Parents often ask which option is “better.” The honest answer is that both are good choices for children. The Canadian Paediatric Society and NACI treat both the nasal spray and the injection as acceptable options for eligible children. Protection in children is broadly similar. The best vaccine is the one your child can safely get, on time.

Both nasal spray and injected flu vaccines can be appropriate options for eligible children after screening.

A simple way to decide

Think of the choice as three quick questions:

Is my child 2 or older? If not, the injection is the only option.

Does my child have any health condition on the precaution list? If yes, or if you are unsure, ask for the injection or let the clinician decide.

Is a needle a real barrier? If fear might lead you to skip the vaccine, the nasal spray may be worth asking about.

If FluMist is not available at your appointment, the injection is a solid alternative. Waiting weeks for a specific product can leave your child unprotected during flu season.

Who Should Not Get FluMist: Health Checks Before the Spray

Because FluMist contains weakened live virus, some children should not receive it. Your provider will ask screening questions before any dose. Please answer them fully. Do not try to rule your child in or out on your own.

Recent wheezing, severe asthma, immune conditions and certain medicines are among the factors a clinician may review first.

Common reasons a clinician may choose the injection

Severe asthma. Children with severe asthma are generally offered the injection.

Active or recent wheezing. Tell your provider about any recent wheezing or inhaler changes.

Certain immune system problems. Some immunocompromised children, from illness or medication, should not get a live vaccine.

Long-term aspirin use. Children and teens on long-term aspirin or aspirin-containing therapy are not suited to FluMist.

Pregnancy. Pregnant teens should get the injected vaccine instead.

Practical tip

Bring a list of your child’s medications, inhalers, and recent illnesses. It makes screening quicker and more accurate.

What about a stuffy nose on vaccine day?

A heavily blocked nose may stop the spray from reaching where it needs to go. Your provider may suggest waiting or switching to the injection. A mild runny nose is not always a reason to delay. Let the clinician decide.

FluMist BC 2026: Frequently Asked Questions

Is FluMist free in B.C.?

Publicly funded flu vaccines are offered through the provincial campaign. Confirm eligibility when you book through BC Get Vaccinated.

Can my 18-month-old get FluMist?

No. FluMist is not authorized for children under 2. Babies 6 months and older can get an injected flu shot.

Can a pharmacist give FluMist to my 3-year-old?

Yes, B.C. pharmacists can give the nasal spray to eligible children aged 2 and older. If your child needs the injection instead, pharmacies generally give it from age 4.

Is the nasal spray as effective as the needle?

For children, both options offer similar protection, according to Canadian guidance. Neither is promoted as clearly superior for kids. Choose the one your child can safely get.

My child has mild asthma. Can they still get FluMist?

It depends. Severe asthma and recent wheezing are reasons to avoid it. Mild, well-controlled asthma needs a clinician’s assessment.

What if my child sneezes right after the spray?

Tell the provider right away. They will decide whether anything needs to be repeated.
